The Tarpon River neighborhood is located on the Southwest edge of the Central Business District of Fort Lauderdale. It is bounded by the North and West by the New River, on the South by Davie Blvd. and on the East by Andrews Ave. It is bisected by the Tarpon River and parts of the neighborhood were included in the original City of Fort Lauderdale when it was first incorporated in 1911. It is across the river from the performing Arts Center, the Science Museum and the Entertainment District and next to the Broward County Courthouse. The Marshall Bridge is the Westerly end of the River Walk on the South side of the River, right in the middle of the Tarpon River neighborhood. Historic Southside School and Hardy Park are also in the neighborhood.
This neighborhood has multi-million dollar estate homes on the river, stunning modern condominiums in low-rise buildings close to downtown, on the river and along SW 4th Ave. and charming original Florida bungalows on quiet streets in between. The unique River Reach Condominiums is just off the South Fork with a canal wrapping around the buildings creating its own island.
Walking is the preferred mode of travel in this neighborhood with the south side of the Riverwalk starting in Tarpon River right at SW 4th Ave. and a commercial district just to the east along Andrews Ave. with restaurants, shops, and a brand new Publix supermarket. Easy access to I-95 or I-595 also makes this a great place for anyone needing to commute and you're still only 15 minutes from the beach and 10 minutes from the International Airport.
With any of the neighborhoods west of downtown, you have to go under the downtown bridges to get down river but they all open on demand. It takes about 30 minutes to get out to sea. The SW 4th Ave bridge has a 20' clearance, the railroad bridge is left up unless there is a train passing through, the S. Andrews Ave. bridge has a 21' clearance, and the SE 3rd Ave. bridge is 16'. After this, you will still have to pass under the 17th St. Causeway with its 55' clearance when it's closed. It will open upon request anytime at 15 min. intervals if necessary. If you're lucky enough to be able to afford a beautiful home or condo on the river, you will enjoy a very wide berth to park your boat. It ranges from 160-300' wide on the New River and from 110-190' wide on the South Fork. You can take up 1/3 of the width including your dock and boat. Depth varies so if you have a sailboat with a deep draft, check the nautical charts for accurate information. Riverfront lots tend to be big with between 80' and 220' of waterfront. You need 5' of space on either side so if you have 100' of waterfront, your dockage is only 90'. You can dock your speedboat or kayak along the Tarpon River which is 40-50' wide in most places. There are several fixed bridges along it with clearances of 6-8 feet. River Reach is a great option if you have a boat as they have plenty of dockage. The canal is 65' wide and you're right of the South Fork.
